IN THE EARLY DAYS of Sisi’s pregnancy, it was easy enough for Andrássy to forget the terms of the Ausgleich and his appointment as prime minister, and the friendship between the two could remain largely unchanged. But as the evidence has begun to reveal itself, Sisi has been indisposed to visits, and Andrássy, now able to accomplish much on his own because of his role, seeks fewer reasons to insist on the Empress’s help. What escalated their attraction—their mutual passion for the future of Hungary—has found a natural plateau in the satisfaction of their primary goal and the clear evidence that the Empress’s romantic efforts are still with the Emperor. It is not that Andrássy no longer desires Sisi so much as that he has been forced to confront the reality of the power that opposes his desire.

Sisi hides herself away, hoping that the less Andrássy sees her in this state, the easier it might be for them to resume their flirtations as though uninterrupted after she has given birth, but she is so bored without even her normal activities because of her current condition.
